A Guide to Electric Consumption in the Home
What
Appliances Use the Most Energy?
Only a handful of electric
appliances account for most of your energy use. They
include the water heater, refrigerator, freezer, range/oven
and furnace or heating equipment. All the electricity
used by your vacuum cleaner, hairdryer, TV set, electric
fry pan, and washing machine account for less than one-third
of the energy used by your water heater during a months
time. (However, Energy Star certified front load washers
with internal water heaters clean much better, use less
power AND save water which is why we recommend them.)
What
is a Kilowatt-hour?
The basic measure
for electricity use is the kilowatt-hour (kwh), which
is the amount of electrical energy required to operate
a 1000-watt hair dryer for one hour, or, a 100-watt
light bulb for ten hours. Your electric bill indicates
the exact number of kilowatt-hours used, as determined
by a reading of your meter.
The bulk of your bill is based on this number.
